Mission:data has removed ComEd and Ameren Illinois Company from the Green Button Explorer, marking the first time we have demoted a utility for performance reasons.
While the Illinois Commerce Commission adopted a Green Button Connect (GBC) tariff back in 2017, neither of the Illinois utilities have since implemented a usable system for their 5.5 million smart meters. Onboarding takes months or even years, if it is even possible. Recently, Mission:data attempted to register with Ameren Illinois, following their registration guide. Despite multiple attempts to communicate with Ameren, the utility ignored our requests, and then ultimately responded with a notice stating “The Third Party Share My Usage status for Missiondata Coalition has been changed to Inactive because No further communication from vendor.” ComEd has similar issues, with firms reporting that ComEd is unable to onboard them and does not provide technical information, such as an authorization request URL, which is a technical requirement. Mission:data finds it not only appropriate but also necessary to remove these utilities’ designations from our Explorer, which is the only accurate, up-to-date online resource on the energy data that utilities provide.
Since ComEd’s and Ameren Illinois’s are non-functional, the utilities are in conflict with the adopted tariff. Unfortunately, the Commission is not holding the utilities accountable. We will revisit the utilities’ status after improvements are made.
On the bright side, we have added three (3) new utilities to add to the Explorer: Eversource Massachusetts, Indiana Michigan Power Co., and Southwestern Electric Power Co (SWEPCO) which covers Texas and Louisiana. These utilities have approximately 2.3 million smart meters in their territories. While Mission:data works to hold utilities accountable, we also celebrate the progress that has been made for GBC adoption.
After these updates, there are approximately 30 million electric meters nationwide with a functional Green Button Connect system.
