Mission:data is excited to announce the launch of the newly updated Green Button Explorer! The additions are designed to bring greater transparency to energy data access policies and implementations in the US and Canada.

The Green Button Explorer features an enhanced utility map as well as a comprehensive state policy views, creating a valuable resource for policymakers, regulators, and businesses. Users can explore utility-level data including Green Button status, AMI deployment status, real-time electric usage availability and smart meter investment ($), with over $31.5 billion tracked. The state policy view scores ten categories of energy data access policies across the US and Ontario, Canada, complete with citations.

Designed for comparison, the Explorer enables users to view trends across states, regions, utilities, and RTOs/ISOs. Users can also stay informed through news updates on developments in energy data access policies and implementations.

Insights from the Explorer reveal that while at least $31.5 billion* has been spent on smart meters, only 36% of that investment was in utility territories that now offer Green Button Connect. The Explorer highlights where investment is delivering on its promise and identifies the gaps in customer control over energy data. More work needs to be done to bring utilities into the 21st century.

* This is definitely an undercount. We tracked down meter cost numbers for about 125 of the largest utilities nationwide, but will be adding more utilities (particularly the smaller ones) as time goes on. Email us at corrections@missiondata.io with your additions.
